While the Belgian government has taken refuge near Le Havre in France, the King and his staff (officers) move to La Panne, just behind the front line.

On 11th November 1918, exhausted, Germany calls for an end to the fighting. It is an armistice. In 1919, a peace treaty is signed in Versailles. Belgium claims the German areas of Eupen and Malmedy. Therefore, 60,000 Germans become Belgians overnight. What language should they speak?

These German areas are attached to Belgium in 1919 as war reparations. Today, they are part of the Walloon Region. Nine municipalities depend on the German-speaking community.
